Indie Filmmaker Profiles Unknown Region Of Tajikistan

devinthorpe.substack.com

Ryan Bastian is making a film to help the people of the Pamir Region of Tajikistan. He is raising money on Indiegogo. Recently, I caught up with Matthias to learn more about the effort; here’s what he told me:

What is the social benefit you hope to achieve with or through your crowdfunding campaign?

Rural mountain communities in the Pamir Region of Tajikistan are trying to engage the world’s climbing, trekking, & outdoors communities in a bid to build an ecotourism industry that will create jobs and fight poverty in their homeland.

They need help getting their story out to the world and attracting adventurous visitors who value sustainability and responsible environmental practices.

The film project, Unveiling the Pamir, will bring them the exposure they need to build themselves a brighter future.

How much money are you hoping to raise and why? How much have you raised so far?

Over $35,000 USD in professional audio and digital video equipment has already been collected for the project.

To execute production of the film and cover remaining associated costs our crowdfunding campaign has a goal to raise $25,000 USD. These funds will go to the logistics and travel for 4 weeks of filming in Central Asia for a team of four:

Round trip to Dushanbe

Flights to/from Khorog

Visa/GBOA Permit

Evacuation/health Insurance

Food Room & board

SUV taxi to Pamir

Misc. Domestic travel in Pamir

Airline Ticket watcher

Driver in Pamir *

External Hard Drives

equipment Insurance

Insurance Premium

High Speed SD cards

Whom are you trying to help with your project and why?

Our film will benefit the growth of an industry (i.e. ecotourism and sustainable adventure tourism) in the Pamir that has the potential to bring in much needed foreign capital to the economy.

We want to directly support the work of the Pamir Ecotourism Association (PECTA) and the Mountain Societies Development Support Program (MSDSP).

PECTA is an association of local family businesses, guides, and hospitality providers that are dedicated the

environmental sustainability and social impact of tourism in their pristine and beautiful homeland. The small, but growing, tourism industry is improving income-earning potential for impoverished communities along the ancient route of the Persian Silk Road. However, if it’s not done sustainably, positive impacts will be short-lived and local communities could be left to deal with serious long-term negative consequences.

PECTA organizes trekking and Adventure tours in the Pamir Region (a mountainous section of the Silk Road that was once part of the Persian Empire), which helps bring much needed business to the local Tajik economy.

Each tour helps improve the livelihoods of many Pamiri families. These warm and hospitable people are already eagerly struggling to increase their earning potential. They work hard to offer unique products and services to the rare foreign traveler who visits their pristine and beautiful homeland.

What rewards, if any, are you offering to your supporters?
