Houston Food Bank Needs Your Support To Feed the Hungry
The Houston Food Bank is America’s largest food bank in distribution of nearly 600 hunger relief charities in 18 southeast Texas counties. They are raising money on Giftfluence. Recently, I caught up with Ryan Charnov to learn more about the effort; here’s what he told me:
What is the social benefit you hope to achieve with or through your crowdfunding campaign?
I hope to make it easier for charities to raise money through online shopping. Many charities are successfully implementing crowdfunding campaigns, however it is our job to innovate and find new strategies for sustainable giving. I hope to make giving back to your community as simple as shopping at your favorite store, and want to allow consumers to give back to charity through actions that they already do.
How much money are you hoping to raise and why? How much have you raised so far?
My goal is to raise over $1 Million for charities in the next year. We have two live campaigns and are launching more throughout the coming weeks.
Whom are you trying to help with your project and why?
I am trying to help charitable organizations that struggle to find sustainable sources of funding. While traditional crowdfunding methods are great, they are not necessarily reliable year in and year our. By earning donations through online shopping, charities can establish a sustainable source of revenue.
I want to help charities because I know how hard funding can be, and how far funds can be stretched. As a college student I struggled to raise $500 a semester for my organization, Moneythink, that taught financial literacy and college readiness. I despised asking my friends and family for money every semester, and noticed that the best fundraisers were the ones where you ask for a simple action (eat here on a certain day, etc). I know that every dollar invested into charities makes much more than one dollar’s worth of impact and because of that I want to make it as easy as possible for charitable organizations to continually raise funds.
What rewards, if any, are you offering to your supporters?
We are offering financial rewards to charities for online shopping. For example if someone buys a Groupon through our website, between 2% and 7% of their purchase will go to charity. This allows organizations to continually raise money through every day purchases.
